1) Choosing a statistical model
A closed-form normal approximation based on the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) is fast and efficient, but for products with high variance (e.g., collector boxes) its lower tail can extend below zero. These calculators instead use a Monte Carlo method that samples complete packs repeatedly and cannot produce impossible negative opening values.
In practice, for Play Booster boxes, I’ve found the median EV from CLT and Monte Carlo to be within a few dollars of each other. If you make purchase decisions on the median, the model choice often doesn’t change the go/no‑go call much.
2) Gathering pack‑composition data
Using OTJ (Outlaws of Thunder Junction) as an example, we pull pack rules and card pools from:
- Collecting page: Collecting Outlaws of Thunder Junction — overall slots and treatments, and to cross‑check what foil versions are in‑scope for that product.
- Play Booster overview: What Are Play Boosters? — slot rarity splits and odds (when not on the collecting page).
- Card Image Gallery: OTJ Card Image Gallery — to confirm which specific cards appear in Play Boosters.
Note: Newer “Collecting” pages increasingly include the Play Booster rarity breakdown directly. When they don’t, the Play Booster article fills the gap.
3) From data to an EV calculator
Once the model is chosen and the pack structure is verified, we can build an EV calculator. Conceptually:
- Define each pack slot (rarity distributions, special sheets, foil rules, lands, List/BONUS interactions).
- Generate simulated packs using those rules; repeat for many trials to estimate the value distribution.
- Price each card with the chosen price source(s), apply optional filters (e.g., a sift floor), and compute per‑pack and per‑box statistics (median/mean and ranges).
After that, it’s just entering how much product you plan to open and deciding if the juice is worth the squeeze.
4) Why the numbers change between runs
With Monte Carlo, every time you click Calculate, the simulation re‑draws packs — so results vary in a statistically consistent way. A pure CLT model won’t fluctuate (it’s a closed‑form estimate), which is why it appears “constant” between runs.
FAQ: How This EV Calculator Compares to Other Calculators
Comparison scope: revised August 10, 2026. Competitor features and outputs can change; make comparisons with the same product, price timestamp, included treatments, fee basis, and price floor.
How does this compare to Mox Alpha?
When two calculators use the same published odds and the same card-price timestamp, their central estimates should be close. Differences do not by themselves identify an error; first align the inputs and inspect how each tool handles underspecified chase cards, bonus sheets, foils, and replacement slots.
Older products are more likely to diverge because historical collation details can be incomplete or scattered across multiple sources. Our calculator workflow therefore keeps product-specific assumptions visible instead of treating another calculator’s current output as a validation source.
- Price source & timing: This site loads generated local price snapshots in the browser. Compare the source field and snapshot date before comparing totals.
- Inclusion rules: Handling of The List (SPG), Bonus Sheet, land slot, and foil vs. wildcard probabilities may differ in subtle ways.
- Price floors (“sift”): This site applies an optional floor only after complete pack contents are drawn. A different floor or ordering changes the total.
The browser-side simulation and product-specific assumptions can be inspected directly, which makes a slot-by-slot comparison possible.
How does this compare to Anon’s EV calculator (formerly YourFriendsHouse)?
Use the same comparison process: align price timestamp, included card pools, sealed-product contents, fee basis, and any price floor before evaluating a difference. This page does not make a standing accuracy claim about another calculator’s current implementation.
For Collector Boosters where publisher guidance is incomplete, compare the documented assumption for each underspecified branch rather than relying on the final EV alone.
- Price source & timing: This site loads generated local price snapshots in the browser; even small timestamp differences or thin markets can swing EV.
- Coverage & edge cases: Check Box Toppers, Bonus Sheets, The List (SPG), basic land slots, and language‑specific prints explicitly.
- Odds interpretation: Details like the 3‑card R/M cluster’s ≤1‑foil constraint, surge vs. non‑surge splits, and colorful/serialized shares can meaningfully change results.
- Filters / floors: This calculator supports a post-draw “sift” price floor; a different floor or ordering changes totals.
Which one is more accurate?
There isn’t a single definitive answer from the headline total alone. Accuracy depends on the product model, price timestamp, included outcomes, and selling assumptions.
Practical guidance: compare tools with identical inputs, then stress-test any branch whose odds are estimated. Treat a large unexplained difference as a prompt for a slot-level audit, not as evidence that the higher or lower result is automatically correct.
Why that stance? Businesses with sorting infrastructure and distribution pricing can profitably sift boxes even when hobbyists struggle to break-even. When product becomes scarce or hype-driven, box prices can float well above any “expected value” because some buyers pay for the opening experience, not resale economics.
Reminder: EV fluctuates and is not a guarantee of profit. Treat it as a planning tool, not a promise.
What is the “TCG Direct Low” price option?
TCG Direct Low is the lowest price among TCGplayer’s Direct‑fulfilled listings — sellers whose orders are picked, packed, and shipped directly by TCGplayer rather than by individual sellers. Because Direct sellers carry stricter quality and shipping requirements, this price is usually higher than the unrestricted “TCG Low,” but it is often a more realistic benchmark for sealed‑box openers who plan to relist via Direct.
If a card has no active Direct seller, the calculator falls back to other available TCGCSV TCGplayer fields such as TCG Low and TCG Market before giving up. Runtime pages do not add Scryfall price fallbacks.
Why isn’t there a “Direct Seller” pricing option?
The current pricing stack is generated by the local TCGCSV sync process. Calculators consume generated local price files with TCGplayer, Mana Pool, and Cardmarket price bases where available rather than calling Scryfall from the page.
How can I help improve accuracy?
This calculator runs in your browser. If you spot a mismatch, you can inspect the model, file an issue, or suggest changes to the probability assumptions, price inputs, or fee logic. Community scrutiny makes the numbers better.

For a given purchase, a C% band would contain your realized value about C% of the time under the model. Higher confidence ⇒ wider band.
